Popular Stainless Steel Types & Properties
Austenitic Stainless Steel (200 & 300 Series)
Common Grades: 1Cr18Ni9Ti (321), 0Cr18Ni9 (302), 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (316L)
Advantages: Excellent weldability, high ductility (resistant to cracking), strong corrosion resistance, and easy passivation.
Disadvantages: Susceptible to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.
Ferritic Stainless Steel (400 Series)
Common Grades: 00Cr12, 1Cr17 (430), 00Cr17Mo, 00Cr30Mo2, Cr17, Cr17Mo2Ti, Cr25, Cr25Mo3Ti, Cr28
Advantages: High chromium content (11.5–32%), good thermal conductivity, heat resistance, and corrosion stability.
Disadvantages: Lower mechanical strength and poorer workability compared to austenitic steels.
Martensitic Stainless Steel (400 Series)
Common Grades: 1Cr13 (410), 2Cr13 (420), 3Cr13, 1Cr17Ni2
Advantages: High carbon content provides superior hardness and wear resistance.
Disadvantages: Limited ductility and weldability.
